With the short films The Afterlifetime of Colm Feore and Nightlife
In Christopher Guest’s hilarious Best in Show, his signature documentary-inspired style provides a loose framework for a wildly talented cast of human and canine performers to showcase their best behaviour and indulge their worst instincts at the prestigious Mayflower dog show. Amid the comedic chaos and petty squabbles, it’s ultimately the humanity of these quirky characters that makes it work – we may be laughing at them, but deep down, we can relate.
Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara are among the highlights of Best in Show, and they are joined on this programme by two other legends of Canadian film and television. Fellow Second City alumnus Joe Flaherty reprises his old SCTV vampire character as the sole real monster at a series of Hallowe’en parties full of people playing pretend, in filmmaker, musician, and TOPS Shorts Spotlight subject Trevor Anderson’s witty music video for The Wet Secrets – Nightlife. Meanwhile, in Hannah Cheesman’s hilarious short The AfterLifetime of Colm Feore, the famous star of stage and screen plays himself, subjected to a less-than-enthusiastic postmortem audition by Baroness von Sketch’s Carolyn Taylor for his next big role.
