Big
With short film The Little Deputy and the World Premiere of short film Tips are Appreciated
Originally featured in 2012’s When We Were Young programme at Christie Pits Film Festival, Hollywood legend Penny Marshall’s BIG is a coming-of-age comedy romp about a boy whose wish to grow up comes true overnight, but the big shoes prove to be more trouble than they’re worth. Tom Hanks’ charming, highly physical performance as a kid trapped in an adult’s body helped position him as the definitive late 80s/early 90s onscreen everyman, and still resonates today as a nostalgic classic.
A recent Edmonton-to-Toronto transplant, film festival darling Trevor Anderson has become a Canadian filmmaker to watch, and we’re watching him closely as he continues to put out at least two new films every year, with his first feature coming up in 2021. Our opening weekend programme proudly includes his latest short film, Tips Are Appreciated, a film funded by the festival as part of our 10th anniversary season, in which Anderson turns his satirical eye on modern life (and pandemic times). A five-star ride-share driver finds her daily route to the airport becoming a full-on head trip when an ex’s new flame lands in the passenger seat.
To give our audience a second taste of Trevor’s delightfully offbeat humour in this opening weekend screening, tonight’s programme also features his semi-autobiographical and playfully satirical short The Little Deputy, which screened at the festival in 2016. In it, Trevor re-imagines what his younger life as a queer kid in Alberta might have been if he had been raised in a less conservative environment (and in a different historical era).
