homecoming

With the short film Light Down Low

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter’s documentary Homecoming, co-directed by Ed Burke, is a ground-breaking concert film matched only by the iconic stage performances it features. Her long-anticipated headlining Coachella show delayed by a year while the artist gave birth to twins, the documentary allows audiences a rare glimpse into her private life, laying bare her personal and production challenges as she mounts an ambitious creative project while recovering from a difficult pregnancy.

A tribute to HBCUs (Historically Black College and Universities), Homecoming highlights the virtuosic triumph of one of America’s most accomplished, powerful, and relevant popular artists and performers of this century. Joined by hundreds of backup dancers and singers, marching bands, and her multi-award winning family members and close collaborators for two days of live performances dubbed by fans as “BeyChella,” the stellar production was a historic showcase and celebration of Black culture on the biggest stage, and Homecoming set the new standard for high concept concert docs.

Opening for Homecoming is the visually and sonically stunning music video Light Down Low, featuring Congo-born, Toronto-based singer/songwriter Desiire. Directed by AYO, we are treated to captivating aesthetic style showcasing the beauty and cultural roots of the Black Queer and Trans community. From the soulful, Kaytranada-esque baseline to the luminescent hues reflecting off Black skin, Light Down Low feels like a cutscene in Insecure, setting the tone for a euphoric and memorable night out in the city.

(Please note that tonight’s programme features a collection of concert films. There are no live performances.)
