Jumanji

With the short films Cohabitat and Birdlime

In this classic 90s family adventure film, siblings Peter and Judy find the perilous world of Jumanji spilling over into their reality after they stumble upon an old board game in their attic. They quickly learn that they must play the game to completion to save their town and free Alan (played with child-like enthusiasm by Robin Williams), who has been trapped inside the game for decades. Nature and humanity clash spectacularly as the ragtag crew is forced to navigate through their house as it becomes a dangerous jungle, battle wild animals, and outsmart a treacherous colonial big game hunter in order to break the spell. Jumanji reminds us to be careful what we wish for, and the importance of keeping your friends close no matter what strange world you find yourself in.

Both short films accompanying Jumanji highlight the obstacles that arise when the line between the wild and humanity is blurred. Featuring beautifully animated jungle animals transported to a human setting, TOPS alumni filmmaker Kara Blake’s Cohabitat takes the audience on a fever dream through the concept of rewilding within the confines of the home, reflecting on the ways that environments are being constantly redefined. In Birdlime — the term for a sticky substance used to trap exotic birds for trade — director-animator Evan DeRushie showcases the comical journey of a bird held in captivity at the hands of humans, and the otherworldly experiences it entails.
