a league of their own
With World Premiere of short film Magic in Plain Sight
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this July, Penny Marshall’s iconic and influential telling of female friendship, boundary-breaking history, and above all, athletic performance still stands as one of the few popular cinematic classics highlighting women in team sports. A beloved film of Gen X and Millennial female audiences and filmmakers alike, A League of Their Own was hand-selected as the feature pairing by writer-director Paige Gratland, who TOPS invited to make an original short film in celebration of Christie Pits Film Festival’s 10th anniversary year in 2020. Our milestone birthday party was postponed, our homecoming overdue, and this will be a community celebration like none other!
Paige Gratland’s new short documentary Magic in Plain Sight is a portrait of self-taught seamstress Brenna Bezanson, a change-maker in her own right who challenges capitalist and patriarchal ideals in her creation of custom women's clothing. Brenna takes us through her wardrobe of hand-made garments, each a journal entry, talisman, and bit of magic she wears out into the world. Magic in Plain Sight is having its World Premiere at Toronto Outdoor Picture Show.
