roman Holiday
With short film Long Branch
One of classical Hollywood master William Wyler’s most enduring films, and so enchanting that it spiked tourism to the city, Roman Holiday features Audrey Hepburn in her Oscar-winning, first feature role. Princess Ann’s royal duty calls for her to appear publicly as part of her goodwill tour of Europe, but her soul desires the freedom to view Europe on her own terms. The Princess sneaks away one evening, anonymously passing as “Smitty” while she embraces a surprise, covert holiday in Rome. To help her navigate the quintessential cinematic city’s iconic locations and her fish-out-of- water impulses, she employs the guidance of Joe, a reporter who pretends not to recognize the Princess in hopes of getting the private scoop for his paper.
While Roman Holiday is about escaping to the vibrant core of a city, short film Long Branch is about escaping from the city, but both films are about discovering love in improbable places. Hoping to be freed from the pain of a breakup, Lynn journeys to Toronto’s suburban west end for a one-night stand, and stumbles upon romance. This short charms every time, especially for anyone who has ever had to take the TTC beyond the city’s core. Toronto directing duo Linsey Stewart and Dane Clark are one of the filmmaking teams selected to create original short films to celebrate Christie Pits Film Festival’s 10th anniversary. Their new short, Bad Case of Loving You, will premiere at CPFF in 2021.
