The Lunchbox
With short film Lunchbox Loser
Whether it’s in a city with one of the highest population densities in the world or in a crowded schoolyard, it’s still possible to feel alone. Acclaimed Mumbai-set drama The Lunchbox is a tender portrait of the intimacy shared between two strangers alienated by class, age, gender, and family life. A neglected housewife and an accountant on the brink of retirement are connected by chance via Mumbai's famously efficient lunchbox delivery system. This charming romance is conveyed in superbly rich and subtle performances by two of Bollywood’s finest stars, the beloved late leading man Irrfan Khan and award-winning actress Nimrat Kaur.
Ensuring we’ll all want to pack our best picnics for this screening, The Lunchbox will screen with the darkly comic short film Lunchbox Loser, by Toronto filmmaker Virginia Abramovich, which tells a familiar tale of schoolyard alienation and the rigid social hierarchies of grade school.
