Twister
With short film Blackout
Twister is a quintessential action/adventure blockbuster, and has been a festival favourite ever since it first featured in 2014’s Days of Summer programme. Watching the tornado-chasing thrills and spills outdoors and exposed to the elements is a uniquely visceral movie-going experience that we can’t wait to revisit (safely behind the walls of Fort York), but the folksy, dysfunctional charm of the late, great Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt’s team of storm chasers (including the equally wonderful, departed, Philip Seymour Hoffman in a great supporting role from his breakout year) is equally delightful.
Paired with Twister is Sharron Mirsky’s beautifully animated short Blackout, which recalls the legendary Toronto Blackout of 2003 with surprisingly fond nostalgic memories. Taken together, these films capture something true about how crisis -- whether tornado, blackout, or pandemic -- can bring people together.
